Molecules on ice

Research interests

The research project involves studying reactions between stratospherically important molecules and water ice surfaces. The ozone depletion over Antarctica is believed to be catalyzed by such heterogeneous reactions, taking place on the surfaces of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). A popular science description of the project can be found here .

Here lies the motivation for the studies, which are performed at our laboratory on the ICE apparatus, developed at the department by former members of the groups, including supervisor Patrik Andersson.

So far, the interaction of water ice with molecular chlorine has been studied, and the on-going project involves N x O y molecules as NO 2 , N 2 O 4 and N 2 O 5 .
