Chemical Characterisation of Organic Aerosol Particles and Implementation in Models Funding: MISTRA idébidrag, ACCENT Objectives: Establish new methods for characterisation of the organic part of aerosol particles. Evaluate the contribution of secondary organic aerosol formation to different size classes of an aerosol relevant for Nordic conditions. Develop models for secondary organic aerosols that are applicable for air quality issues under Nordic situations. Link the results obtained to upcoming international/national agreements and regulations. Description: The present project focuses on the organic fraction of aerosol particles. This fraction originates both from anthropogenic activities and from nature itself. For accurate quantification and identification, existing analytical methods must be developed and employed on aerosol particles, both as bulk measurements and single particle measurements. Two Nordic sites (one rural and one urban) have been selected for intense field measurements. For selected time periods high quality measurements will be done with high time and size resolution. These will give a good database suitable for in-depth analysis and comparison with models. Parallel to the analytical development and measurements, a model scheme for the organic aerosol fraction will be developed. This is an extension of the EMEP (European Monitoring and Evaluation Program) model that has been used numerous times in the past as basis for political decisions. By using this model and link it to the measurements a valuable and more accurate tool for upcoming international / national agreements and regulations on aerosol particles will be at hand. |
